Films Directed by Mike L. Murphy

That was the first live-action film (well it’s a commercial, but you get the idea) that I ever directed!

It was absolutely thrilling to show up at the beach with a full crew, a rain machine, a giant green screen and a bunch of actors!

Things have only gotten larger and more complicated since then! I’ve gone off to direct a number of commercials and short films. You can see them with the links below.

Trahm: Legacy – Short Animated FilmI directed this short film for Stun Creative.  It was a viral spoof we created in 6 weeks (INSANE!) for the Rahm Emmanuel campaign.  Roger Ebert gave it a thumbs up!  Sweet! Read more about it here: http://www.screenmag.com/story/2011/mar/01/580/
Concept Car – Short Film TeasersHere are some fun teasers I shot for my upcoming short film ‘Concept Car’. My friends and I spent a few weeks animating and compositing the car into these background plates (that’s just a fancy way of saying backgrounds that the live-action film crew created for us to insert animation into). Teaser #1 Teaser #2 ...

Dirty Jobs – Dirty Presidents – Jimmy CarterAnother of the 12 Dirty Jobs animated bumpers I directed for Discovery Channel’s ‘Dirty Jobs’.

Home Depot – CommercialHere is a commercial I shot for Home Depot. I had a lot of fun on this. My friends at Weta Workshop built all the miniatures. The live-action was all shot on a soundstage in Van Nuys, while the miniatures and FX were produced in Wellington, New Zealand. I casted my friend’s Grandfather Mac to ...
Weather Channel – CommercialThis is the first commercial I ever directed! I was so nervous the 2 days we shot. I had no idea how a film set worked (I was just an animator!) but I knew I needed to get experience directing actors and live-action. We shot at a number of locations, including the state beach! Interesting ...
Get Lost- Short FilmI shot this film in my living room two days before moving to New Zealand! Don’t try that at home kids! The animation took 2 years to complete because I had to squeeze it in while animating on Lord of the Rings, which averaged 14 hour days! But suffice to say, follow your passions! This ...
Night of the Broccoli – Short FilmI directed this short film on a whim while living in New Zealand. I ‘storyboarded’ it out by roughly video taping my actors before I shot the final film. The DP (or Director of Photography) was the super talented Adam Clarke who also shot Rose. I spent 3 months rotoscoping the broccoli so they could ...
Concept Car: Previs SequenceHere is a presentation piece I created for a short film ‘Concept Car’ that I’m currently developing into a feature film. My big-shot screenwriter buddies Ron J. Friedman & Steve Bencich wrote the short and are developing the feature. This presentation is called ‘Previs’ or ‘Previsualization’. It’s essentially animated storyboards. This is what all the ...
Coca-Cola: Share the MagicI directed this spot for Coca-Cola. It was a lot of fun to work within the confines of an established brand and bring a painting to life. We shot the girl on a green screen stage and had to make sure the painting on the wall was the exact dimensions of the frame we built ...
